Sampling for a remodel
Sampling follows the scope of your work. Redoing a kitchen could mean samples from each floor layer, the wall behind the cabinets and the ceiling texture, and if the plan grows into the next room, we sample there too.

You can’t tell asbestos by sight, so the work begins with samples. An MDH-certified inspector takes small pieces of the materials your project will disturb, and an accredited lab tests each one. The written report lists every sample with its result.
Book sampling before the remodel, the furnace swap or the teardown, not after it. We set it up for owners, landlords and builders across Edina, Richfield and Hopkins.

Before any demolition, MPCA requires an MDH-certified inspector to inspect the structure. For a teardown, that survey covers the whole house, starting in the basement and finishing with the siding and roof.
The samples go to a lab accredited under NVLAP or the AIHA bulk asbestos program. Each one gets its own percentage on the report, and Minnesota law calls a material asbestos-containing once it has more than 1 percent.
If your building was finished after October 1988, sampling may not be needed. MDH accepts a signed statement that no asbestos went into the project, written by the architect or contractor, in place of the inspection. No letter means the inspection goes ahead as usual.
The report settles more than one question, because several rules depend on it.
A copy of the asbestos survey showing nothing needs removal is one of the two papers Edina’s demolition checklist accepts from a licensed abatement contractor. The other is a closeout letter written after removal.
This rule protects workers rather than owners. Say a remodeling company with employees is opening walls in your home where asbestos may be present. Before that crew starts any demolition, remodeling or restoration, the employer must have a qualified person survey the building.
The year a public or commercial building went up doesn’t change this. A school, store or office from any decade must be inspected for asbestos before anyone renovates or demolishes it.
