Floor Tile and Mastic Removal in Edina

Typical cost in Edina

  • One bathroom or laundry floor, about 50 to 100 sq ft$1,150 – $2,800+
  • One kitchen or large room, about 150 to 300 sq ft$1,700 – $4,800+
  • Several rooms or a basement, about 500 to 1,000 sq ft$3,800 – $11,500+

On an older floor, the vinyl tile, the sheet flooring and the black or dark adhesive below them can each contain asbestos. Every layer is sampled separately, and whatever tests positive comes up until only clean subfloor is left. We bag and label the pieces on the spot.

Floor tile and sheeting in any home of up to four units now fall under Minnesota’s asbestos work rules like any other material. The state ended their exemption on July 1, 2021. Our crews take up floors in Edina, Richfield and Hopkins kitchens, baths, entries and basements.

Floors we remove

Tile under carpet

Pull back an older carpet and there may be tile below it. When the lab confirms asbestos, the tiles come loose by hand, whole wherever possible. Sanders, grinders and chipping hammers stay off the job because they break the tile apart.

Adhesive under the tile

Tile and the glue under it don’t always give the same lab result. We sample the adhesive as its own material and plan the removal around both reports.

Sheet vinyl with a felt backing

Under linoleum-type sheet flooring there can be a paper backing. In most cases MPCA counts that backing as friable, so we keep it wet and bag it right where it lifts.

Covering it over

MDH allows a new floor over asbestos flooring that is still in good condition. Cracked or crumbling tile is different, since damaged tile can give off fibers, and that is when we would price removal instead.

Planning a floor job

Flooring removal fits between the tear-out and your installer.

Stacked layers

A kitchen can hold two or three floors laid one over another. Each layer is sampled, so the plan covers the whole stack.

Appliances and trim

Have the appliances moved out, or tell us so we can plan for it. Baseboards resting on the tile may need to come off first.

Before new flooring

When the last layer is up, the bare subfloor is yours to check with the flooring installer before new material goes down.
