Taped duct seams
Seam tape on ducts and register boots is sampled on its own, separate from any pipe wrap nearby.
Typical cost in Edina
Before a new furnace, boiler or water heater goes in, the old insulation around ducts and pipes may need to come off. MDH lists duct, pipe, boiler and furnace insulation among home products that can contain asbestos. After a lab confirms it, we strip the wrap so the installer works on bare metal.
Book this before the installer’s date, because the amount of friable material decides whether a licensed crew is required: more than 10 linear feet on pipes, or more than 6 square feet on duct wrap and other parts. State law makes a home job with more than 10 linear feet of friable pipe insulation MDH-licensed work. We do that work in basements, crawlspaces and mechanical rooms in Edina, Richfield and Hopkins.

Straight runs, elbows and valves are wetted, cut free in short sections and bagged before anything is moved.
The body of an older boiler or furnace may be covered in insulation as well. It is sampled, then removed before the equipment is disconnected and hauled out.
Patching a short length near a leaking joint can look minor. Amounts within the state limits are not regulated work, yet MDH warns that this does not make them safe, so a short length gets the same wet methods as a long run.
MDH’s limits apply to every trade working in a home. Whenever a job involves more than those amounts of friable material, only an MDH-licensed asbestos contractor may disturb the material, whether the work is a furnace swap or a bathroom remodel.
If you rent the house out, the work goes to a licensed contractor when the work involves more than the limits. The state exemption belongs only to an owner living in their own single-family house, and even there MDH strongly recommends a licensed crew. Duplexes and apartment buildings get no exemption.
Book sampling before the installer’s date. Regulated removal needs notice to MDH five calendar days ahead, and a mid-project discovery does not count as an emergency.
